The Project. Letting ourselves be inspired by the well-known classic Magic Bamboo, we created a new version of this coordination challenge which finally meets any professional trainer's demands. Whereas with the original 7-foot-long bamboo version, transportation proved to be a difficult issue (and one of the reasons why trainers used to drive station wagons), our four-part aluminum Floating Stick makes a comfortable piece of hand luggage, popular even with flight companies: "Oh, you're going camping! But where's the rest of your tent?" Due to its variable length, it easily adapts to group sizes from 6 up to 22 participants. Definitely a must-have for your next workshop!
How It's Done. The participants form two lines, facing each other. On their extended index fingers, the trainer places the Floating Stick, gently but not overtly pushing it downwards. The group's task is to lower the stick to the ground. The only rule to observe is to never lose the contact between their fingers and the stick. But at the count of three, as the trainer releases her/his hold, the stick begins moving up instead of down, as if full of helium! The reason: In trying to maintain contact with this extremely lightweight staff (weighs only 200 grams at 4 meters length, thanks to a special aluminum alloy), each participant pushes upwards just ever so slightly. All others follow this motion, effectively raising the staff instead of lowering it. Detailed planning, concentration, self-organization and moderation are the keys to mastering this task.
