As the godmother of the BigOne Art, you were one of the first to test our new marker. What was the first thing that came to mind when you first held it in your hands?

Finally! A dream come true! The most frequent question I get in my No.One Art workshops is: "When will Neuland release a BigOne version?" I asked Guido the same question about five years ago. Back then, he hesitated because it's very difficult to fill a nib with so much ink without it clogging or leaking. Now he's somehow managed it, making the world so much more beautiful!

There is currently no comparable marker on the market. In which situations is the BigOne Art an absolute must-have?

The BigOne Art is definitely a must-have for headlines and large lettering. If you prefer large brush lettering to faux calligraphy, then the BigOne Art is indispensable. It's the most versatile marker I know and perfect for visualizations on flip charts , pinboards , or graphic walls . I also use it for labeling larger packages.

You're known for your lettering skills... Have you already developed a new style for BigOne Art , or is something like that in the works? 😉

Yes, I'm in the final stages and already busy testing. But I also have 5, yes FIVE, lettering styles ready that anyone can directly apply to the new BigOne.

  • Wacky Western
  • Sign Painter
  • Brush lettering
  • National Parks
  • Twinkle

You can also use BigOne Art for the following styles:

  • Architect
  • Double stroke first stroke
  • Neuland hand
  • Carol DuBosch's Jubilee Script

For the lettering style I'm currently working on, I originally had FineOne Flex in mind. But now that we have BigOne Art, we can apply this style to all formats – from business card text to flipchart-sized lettering! Since Neuland now offers so many interchangeable tools, I'm currently creating a kind of template that can be customized depending on whether you're writing with FineOne Flex, No.One Art, or BigOne Art.

We've already discussed some lettering styles that work well with BigOne Art. Which one is your favorite?

Definitely Wacky Western! This style is fun, looks cool, and is quick and easy. Plus, it looks especially good on a large scale. Anyone who knows me knows that the brush tip is my absolute favorite because it's so versatile. And my favorite styles are the ones I feel most confident writing with.

Why would you recommend Neuland BigOne® Art?

This marker will perfectly complement your collection. It allows you to do things no other marker can, and there's no comparable marker on the market. Whether you work as a visualizer or not, if you work on large formats, you need this marker!

I recommend getting it in your favorite colors. I also like to order the empty markers and fill them with my favorite ink. Neuland inks mix very well, and I simply love mixing my own ink .

From small to large

Now you might be wondering if there's any significant difference between the Neuland No.One® Art and the Neuland BigOne® Art. Heather was kind enough to make a video comparing all the brush markers :

Tips and tricks for the Neuland BigOne® Art

If you want to master BigOne Art, you should first build up enough self-confidence and finesse. As a renowned lettering expert, Heather knows exactly what's important in the Neuland of BigOne® Art and how you can improve your hand lettering skills, even if you think you're a hopeless case. So take her tips and tricks to heart and take your lettering skills to the next level!

Good to know – the attitude

  • Be sure to use the ergonomic grip recesses when writing.
  • Learn to control your marker with brush lettering. By changing the grip, angle, and pressure, you'll achieve the finesse you need for this type of brush marker.
  • Use the hand lettering learning pad (any size will do) and follow the guidelines. It's the fastest way to improve your lettering. I used to think I was smart enough to learn without one. Instead, my lettering suffered for years.
  • Take your time! The larger your font, the longer it will take.

Good to know – the top

  • Make sure the nib is always sufficiently filled with ink! If it's too dry, it will be subjected to more wear and tear. However, you shouldn't drown it.
  • If the tip changes shape at some point, you can simply turn it slightly and the writing feel will be like it was at the beginning.
  • It's better to replace the tips a little too early and regularly. When doing so, it's best to use another BigOne Art marker as a guide. If you insert the tip too far, you'll lack flexibility; if you don't insert it far enough, it might hit the top of the cap, and you won't be able to close the marker properly.
  • Remember to always store your Neuland BigOne® Art with the point facing down.
