Neuland has taken over exclusive distribution of the popular ‘Karl & Karlchen’ cutting guides

A breath of fresh air for the DIY and sewing community: the clever ‘Karl & Karlchen’ sewing gadgets are now fully under the umbrella of Neuland GmbH & Co. KG. Since 1 July 2026, the renowned company based in Eichenzell, Hesse, has been exclusively managing the marketing and sales of the popular cutting aid. The product, which has built up a loyal following over the past ten years via various online channels, is now being sold centrally through its own, optimised online shop.

From a private sewing room to the wider market

The story behind ‘EinfachKarl’ is a true family project with a generous dose of inventive spirit. In 2017, shareholder Sabine Neuland stepped back from the day-to-day operations of Neuland. In her newly found free time, she took up an old hobby again: dressmaking. She soon realised that the precise and laborious task of marking out seam allowances was robbing her of valuable creative time. The idea for a simple aid was born. 

Together with her father, Erich Neuland – who has always been known in the region and within the company for his ingenious inventive spirit – she set to work. What was originally intended as a clever prototype for personal use only quickly became an insider’s tip for the entire market following initial, enthusiastic tests amongst hobby seamstresses. From then on, the product became a real success story within the hobby sewing community, a story that is now being continued by the Neuland family.

The technology: Clever, magnetic and precise

The principle behind ‘EinfachKarl’ is as simple as it is ingenious: the tool is made of lightweight, glass-bead-blasted aluminium and is fitted with an extra-strong magnet.

• Secure hold: The magnet secures the tool in an instant directly to the blade of a pair of scissors (or, in the ‘Karlchen’ version, to a rotary cutter).
• Customisable scaling: An adjustable guide rail, which runs parallel to the cutting edge, can be set precisely to the desired seam allowance width (from 0.7 cm to 6 cm) using an adjusting screw.
• Smooth workflow: When cutting, simply guide the guide bar along the edge of the pattern – the scissors automatically cut the fabric to the selected seam allowance.
