The Sketchnote Barcamp Hannover 2018 - Explore, inspire, Sketchnote love

Sandra Dirks reports on the 1st German Sketchnote Barcamp. Around 100 enthusiastic sketchnote fans met at the Heldraumstation in Hanover in early November 2018. Many already knew each other from Instagram or... from the Facebook group, and the greeting was correspondingly cheerful.

“Oh, it’s you, the…! Great to meet you here. I’m the…!”, the cheerful voices echo through the room and seem to go on forever.

Every Barcamp begins with a special round of introductions; this is the basis for everything:

Photo credits for all the wonderful photos in this post go to @Thomas Dick from inkblot.de. Thank you so much!

Everyone writes down three things about themselves in keywords (tags) on a name tag. In a quick round of introductions, each person states their name and their three tags. That's all, then the microphone is passed on. These tags are three things that are important to the participant at this moment. Anyone interested in discussing one or more of these tags simply needs to remember which face corresponds to them. This way, even a large group of 100 participants won't get boring. After all, everyone wants to know if there's anyone else with the same or similar tags.

Two newcomers, Jens and Dominik, were also present. Naturally, they couldn't resist the quick round of introductions.

In addition to new products, such as the work wall which was used as a session plan, they also brought a colorful box of markers for discussing and trying things out.

The wall can be used in many different ways, for example as a session plan with the chalk marker and the Estatics, and the whiteboard on the back to visualize the network and the connections to each other.

The new chalk markers (not yet available in the shop) can be tested on the kitchen cabinets.

Chris Campe gives a lettering workshop, Tanja Wehr exchanges ideas about sketchnoting materials in her session, the Nerdtalk.

I secretly observed that someone was even cuddling the new BulletProof Sketchbook . It really is a lovely, cuddly thing to hold.

Then there's also Marker-Mike, who makes sure that some original voices can be captured.

Collective aha moment:

All these wonderful people you know from Instagram are real. They're great in real life too. On Instagram, people always share their best photos, marvel at them, and get caught up in their stories. In "real" life, they share genuine tips and tricks, and no question goes unanswered. That's what makes this community so special.

In the end, it's a real shame that the two days, which feel like a party, are over so quickly. But after the Barcamp is before the Barcamp.

See you in Hanover in 2019?
