Beautiful handwriting on the flipchart: Handlettering Learning Pad

Trainers know it, designers do too, and seminar participants are often intimidated by the blank sheet of paper. Especially if they are unfamiliar with the dimensions – such as an empty flip chart pad or even a sheet of pinboard paper. Questions like "What font size should I use?" and "Will others be able to read it easily?" push their way to the forefront from the subconscious and cause even more uncertainty.
That doesn't have to be the case – because beautiful writing in large format is like many other things: practice makes perfect.

But how to practice correctly

To make practicing easy and straightforward, we have developed a writing practice pad together with the American Heather Martinez , which already has the appropriate guidelines pre-printed for three common Neuland marker types: headings with the BigOne, body text with the No.One and fluffy calligraphic accents with the ArtMarker.

Guidelines in the new relationship

Experienced facilitators learned to write presentation notes using guidelines in a 1-3-1 ratio. This ratio of ascenders, x-height, and descenders can also be found on the ductus practice sheet, which you can download here on the blog. The relatively short ascenders and descenders are perfect for writing on presentation cards, if you follow the old facilitator rule of "think and write in three lines."

However, we felt it was time, especially for easily legible writing on flipcharts, pinboards, and GraphicWalls, to give the ascenders and descenders a little more space. They now have a ratio of 3-5-3.
Here is an excerpt from the Learning Pad in the size for Neuland No. One ®.

Ornate details are welcome.

Another one of those sentences that sends a chill down the spine of many a seasoned moderator. After all, in the book "Neuland Moderation" (New Territory Moderation), point 4 of the rules of writing still stated "Write without embellishment".
Are we about to turn everything upside down?
Not at all, because it's not about writing all the text on the flipchart in a tangled, illegible hand. Rather, it's about developing the ability to use the art of beautiful handwriting to great effect. With the ArtMarker, we have the perfect writing instrument, and with the special pages in the Handlettering Learning Pad, we now also have the right practice sheets for handwriting.

There's still more to come!

Heather Martinez is currently on a road trip across the USA – taking a creative break. We're already looking forward to further collaboration and even more information and practical tools for the art of beautiful writing. Stay tuned!
